Children’s Service — June 28, 2020

Hello St. Thomas’.

Below is the service for families with young children ages preK – 3rd grade can use for Sunday worship in their homes.  Let’s all try to start worship at 10:45 on Sunday Mornings.  As you gather for worship, please think about who you can Facetime or otherwise electronically connect to your worship.  If you want to worship individually, please say this service out loud.

If you’re worshipping as a family, the head of the household should lead worship.  This means the Father, but, if the Father is not available, then the Mother should lead.  Some parts of the service (such as the Scripture reading and prayers) can be delegated out to others as they become familiar with the service.

The group responses are in blue.

Please don’t worry about how “messy” these family worship times can be.  Children will get distracted, others may be embarrassed to participate.  The goal is to come together and worship the Lord.  Have fun with it!

READING

Discussion Question 1: What was the world like at the beginning of the story?  How was God going to fix it? (How does he still fix it today?)

Discussion Question 2: How do you think Abraham and Sarah felt when God told them they were going to have a family?  Why do you think they felt that way? (How do we react to God’s promises?)

Discussion Question 3: How is baby Isaac like baby Jesus? Why is this story good news for us? Who can we share this good news with?

Let us now reaffirm our faith in the words of the ancient baptismal confession, the Apostles’ Creed.

Leader: Do you believe and trust in God the Father?

I do. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Leader: Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

I do. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and
Born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day, he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
And is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead.

Leader: Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit?

I do. I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy catholic church,
The communion of Saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection fo the body,
And the life everlasting,
AMEN

Leader: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Almighty and most merciful Father;
We have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep,
We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts,
We have offended against your holy laws,
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done,
And we have done those things which we ought not to have done,
And there is no health in us.
But you, O Lord, have mercy upon us miserable offenders;
Spare those, O God, which confess their faults,
Restore those that are penitent,
According to your promises declared unto us in Christ Jesus our Lord;
And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
That we may hereafter live a Godly, righteous, and sober life,
To the glory of your holy Name.
Amen.

Leader: Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
Who of his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins
To all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him;
Have mercy upon us; pardon and deliver us from all our sins;
Confirm and strengthen us in all goodness;
And bring us to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

PRAYERS

Leader: The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Leader: Let us pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
And the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever.
AMEN.

Please pray for these groups of people:

  1. Our church leaders, St. Thomas’ family, our missionaries, and our sister church in Rio Mena, Nicaragua
  2. Three people we love that do not know the good news of Jesus Christ
  3. For all those who are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity

CLOSING SONG

CLOSING SONG
This is Amazing Grace

Leader: Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time, with one accord, to make our common prayers to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that we two or three are gathered together in his Name you will grant their requests:  Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us, granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting.

Amen.

Leader: Let us bless the Lord

Thanks be to God.

Leader: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all, evermore.

Amen.

RESPONSE THROUGH PLAY

Two Truths + a Lie

This game is played as each family member shares three things about themselves, two are true and one is false.  The other family members try to guess the fact that is the lie about each player.  Have a parent or adult start the game by sharing three things with one being really silly and easy to identify as the lie.  Talk with your children about how they knew it was a lie focusing mainly on the lie being easy to detect because the children know the adult well.

            Ask your children how we get to know God better and have a family discussion about ways you seek God.  Tell the children that there will be people in the world who tell lies about who God is and sometimes it is easy to doubt him like Sarah and Abraham did. Let your children know how important it is to know God through spending time with him so we can tell the lies apart from the truth.
