Read + Respond
Read Along With Us!
We are working on a chronological reading of The Jesus Storybook Bible. This week read “Running away” and remind your children of God’s big love for us. Read Deuteronomy 15: 4-11 and see how God asked his people to treat the poor and hurting. Link the two passages by talking about how the father in “Running away” shows God’s love for his son just like God asked the people to care for the poor.
RESPONSE THROUGH PLAY + SERVICE
Have a stack of books nearby and tell your children you are going to do a strength challenge. Have one child go first by holding one book and then adding on. This can also be accomplished with smaller objects such as stuffed animals. As you add each book or object, talk about how the objects are getting heavier and the job of holding them is getting harder and harder. Keep piling on books until it becomes too heavy and the child drops them, or another child or family member offers to help. Once the offer of help is made, allow another family member to step in and help carry the burden.
Once the challenge is over, talk with your children about how God calls us to work together in our community to help others and one we can do that is by steeping in to help others who are struggling when the “job” at hand is too hard. This includes the poor and needy in our community. Talk as a family about who you could pray for and or serve this week to show the love of Christ in our community.
